Skin care during pregnancy
Pregnancy is always a challenge for the skin. The abdomen and breasts increase in size very quickly, hormonal changes influence the appearance of blemishes on the skin and increased blood flow influences the vascular changes. Not to mention cellulite, which also tends to appear far worse over the nine months because of the extra weight you gain, fluid retention and hormonal changes.
Therefore, taking care of your skin from the inside with a balanced diet and a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day, as well as a daily skin care regime for your face and body is more important than ever during pregnancy.
Starting from the top
Before we move onto the skin on your body, you mustn’t forget the skin on your face...
With the increased blood volume and hormones, your skin can become increasingly sensitive. Therefore, becoming more prone to broken capillaries, breakouts or dry and patchy. This is where Skeyndor’s Aquatherm comes into play. It is important to have facials on a monthly basis which will help keep the skin at bay, as well as keeping the capillaries strong and healthy. Not to mention the relaxation time and shoulder massage you receive during the treatment.
Home care products are especially designed to keep the in salon treatment benefits going. In this instance, it will also help the skin bounce back to normal after pregnancy.
Improving the hydration and elasticity of your skin
Already in the first months, the breasts increase in volume and fat accumulates in the mammary glands, preparing them to produce milk. This causes that ‘stretching skin feel’, tingling, itching and discomfort. These same symptoms can apply to the abdominal area as your belly grows. To minimize this, you have to intensely hydrate the skin to keep its elasticity.
However, the main fear during pregnancy is usually stretch marks. They can appear around the navel, on the breasts, thighs/hips. Although the appearance of stretch marks have a strong genetic factor, consistency in using hydration and firming products can help prevent them. We recommend after 4mths into your pregnancy that you apply Skeyndors Body Sculpt Stretch Mark and Firming Cream on your chest and abdomen area mainly at night after showering, always making upward motions on the chest to lift and circular and upward motions on the abdomen until the product is fully absorbed. If your skin is feeling dry during the day then apply morning as well.
Varicose veins
Especially in the third trimester, the extra volume of blood produced to help baby’s development can put extra pressure on your blood vessels; especially the veins in your legs, which have to work against gravity to push all that extra blood back to your heart. This combined with hormonal influences and the pressure your expanding uterus puts on your pelvic blood vessels, you have the perfect recipe for varicose veins by usually around 29 weeks.
- Keep your blood flowing by getting off your feet whenever you can and keeping your legs elevated, flex your ankles every so often and try breaking the habit of crossing your legs.
- Go for a 20min walk everyday or do some other form of low key exercise such as pregnancy specific pilates, yoga etc.
- Make sure you wear loose and comfortable clothing and underwear that don't restrict your blood and lymphatic flow.
- Sleep on your left side, this helps to avoid pressure on your main vessels and keep circulation going strong.
- Make sure you get your daily dose of Vit.C Your body uses Vit.C to strengthen the connective tissue that repair and maintain blood vessels.

- You can't get rid of cellulite but you can certainly help reduce the fat cells and the appearance of cellulite on your skins surface.
- The good news is if you have cellulite, you are less likely to develop heart disease. The reason; the fat accumulates on the lower part of the body rather than the upper areas.
